I've moved houses and countries more times than I can count — solo in my twenties (fearless and clueless, bless me), and later as a mum and wife juggling chaos like a pro. So yes, we know the drill — the paperwork mountain, the "Wait, where are we living now?" panic, and the endless small disasters.

But this time? Oh no, this time was a whole different kind of circus.

We weren't chasing a job, family drama, or some random plot twist. We moved because we felt… unsettled. Not unhappy, just deeply "this isn't home" vibes. Mostly, we wanted a better life for our son — one with actual sunshine, less stress, and the kind of childhood that doesn't involve daily panic attacks. That's how Portugal snuck its way onto our map.

🌿 When Your Kid's School-Related Stress Signals a Need for Change

What really tipped the scales was watching our kid spiral into school anxiety — not your usual "forgot my lunch" stuff, but full-on, heart-racing, can't-sleep kind of stress.

The school itself was great, with lovely teachers and a principal who genuinely cared. He even had friends. But the system? It just wasn't built for him.

Look, many of us survived flying chalk and questionable cafeteria food and turned out alright — but this wasn't the '90s, and I wasn't about to roll out the "toughen up" mantra. Nope, I was here for real options.

With no job tying us down (thank you, remote working!), the world was our oyster — and I researched every grain of it.

After two decades abroad, I had a very clear list of what I needed — and believe me, it looked nothing like my twenties' checklist. Back then, it was "cheap rent" and "trendy neighbourhoods."

However, now…? Well, let's just say I get excited about a nearby pharmacy that's open 24/7. I love a good pharmacy!

🌿 Enter Portugal… Kind Of By Accident

Portugal? Total accident.

I'd never been, barely thought about it — just assumed it was Spain's awkward cousin you visit if you get lost. Spain was the dream… until a family food poisoning disaster (think: everyone down for the count) made us reconsider.

So we broadened the search. Portugal popped up like that shy kid who turns out to be the coolest at the party. We did two scouting trips, including catching Covid on round two (because why not test the local germs before moving?).

Despite the setbacks, Portugal felt right. Slower pace, authentic vibes, kid-friendly and delicious food. Perfect for our chaotic family life.

And so began our relocation to Portugal.

🌿 Our First Try-Out Trip: Cold, Wet & Absolutely Worth It

To get a real feel for day-to-day life, we came in January. Yes, January. I know — the worst month to visit Portugal. We rented an Airbnb with broken heating (yay us), and froze our behinds off in what felt like a glorified stone fridge.

Now, I'm all for adventure… but no hot water and no heating? That's my breaking point. So yes, I did have more than a few grumpy moments.

Still, we made the most of it:

🌿 Pro Tip 1: Airbnb in Winter? Choose New Builds

If you're travelling to Portugal with kids during winter, I highly recommend booking Airbnbs in newer development buildings.

Yes, they might lack that Pinterest-perfect charm, but trust me — when you're warm, mould-free, and everything works, you won't miss the cobblestones and antique tiles.

And if you're wondering what those random buckets of pinecones are doing in the corner, they're nature's fire starters. Light them up in your wood-burning fireplace and enjoy the smell!

🌿 Pro Tip 2: Wet Wipes Deserve More Credit

If you're travelling with a child — or even solo — and there's no warm water, wet wipes are your best friend in a packet.

I never leave home without them!

🌿 Real Life vs. Real Estate: Buckle Up

Once we picked a school that ticked all our boxes, it was time to look at homes. And let me tell you: house hunting in Portugal is not for the faint-hearted. It's like a weird mix of treasure hunt and a rollercoaster.

But in Portugal, if you wait around for a viewing, the place will be gone faster than you can say "bom dia."

But we did it. We moved. We survived.

And despite the rain, baffling contracts, and broken boilers, we are so glad we did.

Yes.

And also, it depends.

It depends on your needs, your flexibility, and whether you're okay trading your comfort zone for a bit of chaos, a slower pace, gorgeous scenery, amazing food, and a lifestyle that just feels… right.
